Australia

Australia is the size of continental Europe with most of its population on the eastern and southern coasts, so trips usually pick one or two regions: the reef and rainforest of Queensland, the red centre, or the south-east cities and coast. Internal flights cover the distances. Seasons reverse against the northern hemisphere, and the tropical north has a distinct wet season.

Melbourne

Melbourne is a grid city where the interest sits in the laneways: coffee, street art, small bars and food from every migrant community in the country. Trams cover the centre and are free in the central zone. It is the base for the Great Ocean Road and the Yarra Valley.

Sydney

Sydney is arranged around a large natural harbour, with ferries as ordinary transport and ocean beaches a short ride from the centre. The coastal walks between beaches are the city's best free activity. Four days covers the harbour, two or three beaches and a day trip to the Blue Mountains.

• Autumn: Warm and settled in the south-east; the north drying out.
• Winter: Dry season in the north and the best time for the centre and reef.
• Spring: Wildflowers in the west, whales on the coast, mild everywhere.
