Prague
Prague survived the twentieth century with its Gothic, Baroque and Art Nouveau layers intact, so the centre reads as one continuous historic city rather than a restored fragment. The Vltava splits the castle district from the old town, and both sides are walkable. Crowds concentrate on Charles Bridge and the astronomical clock, but the surrounding lanes empty out quickly.

The largest ancient castle complex in the world by area, holding St Vitus Cathedral, the old royal palace and the Golden Lane above the Malá Strana rooftops.
