Tromsø
Tromsø sits 350 km above the Arctic Circle on an island between mountains and fjords, and is the most practical northern lights base in Norway thanks to direct flights. Winter brings aurora chases, dog sledding and whale watching; June and July bring the midnight sun and mountain hiking. It is a university town, so it has more going on than its size suggests.
How long to stay
Late September to March for aurora; June to July for the midnight sun.
