Ptuj
Ptuj is the oldest recorded town in Slovenia, a compact Drava-side centre of red roofs below a hilltop castle. The Kurentovanje carnival in February fills the streets with sheepskin-clad Kurent figures and is the reason many Slovenes visit at all. The rest of the year it is quiet, cheap and easy to combine with the thermal spas and vineyards of the surrounding hills.
How long to stay
February for Kurentovanje; May to September for vineyards and the riverside.
