Pico do Fogo is an active volcano rising to 2,829 m inside a collapsed caldera, with villages farming vines and coffee on the crater floor. The last eruption in 2014 buried part of Chã das Caldeiras, and the lava field is still visible. The summit climb takes three to four hours up and about one hour down through ash.
