St Barbara's Church

A fortified hill above the Vltava south of the centre, with ramparts, a neo-Gothic church and the national cemetery, far quieter than the castle.

The second largest castle complex in Czechia, with a painted round tower, bear moat and one of the few surviving Baroque theatres with original stage machinery.

Bohemian Switzerland is a sandstone park on the German border, with gorges cut by the Kamenice river and the largest natural rock arch in Europe at Pravčická brána. Trails link the arch, the gorge boat sections and forest plateaus; a 2022 wildfire closed some routes, which reopened in stages. Hřensko and Mezní Louka are the usual trailheads.

Kutná Hora grew rich on silver in the Middle Ages and spent the money on a Gothic cathedral dedicated to the miners' patron saint. The town also holds the Sedlec ossuary, where the bones of about 40,000 people are arranged into chandeliers and coats of arms. Both sites plus the old town make a comfortable day from Prague.
