Staubbach Falls

The fourteenth-century covered wooden footbridge across the Reuss, with painted panels in the roof gables and a stone water tower beside it.

The 2,128-metre mountain above Lucerne, reached by the world's steepest cogwheel railway from Alpnachstad or by gondola from Kriens.

A flat-floored glacial trench with vertical walls on both sides and 72 waterfalls falling into it, including the Staubbach which drops almost 300 metres beside the village. Cable cars and rack railways climb from the valley to car-free Mürren and Wengen, which are the starting points for most of the hiking. It is the practical base for the Jungfrau region.

Ten glacier-fed falls inside the mountain, reached by a tunnel lift and galleries cut into the rock.

A 2,970-metre summit above Mürren reached by a chain of cable cars, with a revolving restaurant facing the Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau.

Zermatt is a car-free village at the head of a Valais side valley, directly below the Matterhorn's north face. Trains from Täsch are the only way in, and from the village three lift systems rise to glacier level and to the Gornergrat viewing railway. Hiking, glacier skiing and mountaineering all run from the same base.
