Slovenia's highest road pass, fifty hairpins over the Julian Alps between Kranjska Gora and the Soča valley, open in summer only. The road climbs to 1,611 metres, and each hairpin is numbered with a sign showing its altitude. Along the way you pass the small Russian Chapel, built by prisoners of war, and several mountain huts that serve simple meals. At the top, short walks lead to viewpoints with panoramic views of the surrounding peaks, and longer hikes head into Triglav National Park. The pass is usually open from late spring to autumn, depending on snow. In summer a seasonal bus runs between Kranjska Gora and Bovec. Drive slowly because the hairpins on the northern side are cobbled, and expect cyclists and motorcyclists on fine weekends.
